Jim Ogonowski's letter to his brother

Tuesday, 13 May 2008

Lately, I've been reading a lot about the senate race in Massachusetts where Jim Ogonowski and Jeff Beatty are vying for the Republican nomination to oust (hopefully) John Kerry as the junior Senator. Naturally, at this stage in the race, there's not a whole lot of information out there (except for the Saugus candidate forum on Thursday - sweet!).

However, I did find this page and have been meaning to post it for a few days. I strongly urge you to read it. It's remarks given by Jim Ogonowski at a Safety Awards banquet on 11 September 2002, one year after his brother, John, was killed when the airplane he was piloting was flown into the World Trade Center. After introducing himself, talking about the need to prevent this from ever happening again and about what he was going to say, he read out a letter (or actually an email) he had written to his brother. It's honestly one of the saddest things I've ever read.

I sometimes feel that the world has moved on a little too easily after 9/11, which is why I was truly glad to have found Jim Ogonowski's speech. It was a timely reminder to those of us who never lost someone that it also our duty to remember.
